Sketchbook competition deadline this week!

We hope your Thanksgiving break was great and that you had plenty of rest and have been rejuvenated!

As a quick reminder, the deadline for the sketchbook competition is tomorrow on Wednesday the 28th (until we check again in the morning on the 29th). We're stoked to see what you creatives have imagined!

Please follow the submission guidelines as stated in the sketchbook flyer within this post and please disregard the "release form" requirement as it is not really needed. Instead, please understand that any work submitted for the competition should be of your own creation and artistic expression.

We're looking forward to your submissions! So get the lead out and make those final adjustments!

The Definition of Hope

President Barack Obama thanks his 2012 Design Director: San Diego City College Graphic Design Alumni
Josh Higgins just after his re-election at Obama HQ in Chicago

Poster designed by Josh Higgins for the 2012 Obama campaign

Wanted to celebrate a very special alumni. Many amazing young designers of all ages and life experiences have studied graphic design with us at San Diego City College. This post is for all those students who have spent time at this humble place [T310 and T309-you know what I mean] and all those who will be with us in the future.

Josh Higgins was chosen from a sea of talent because of his extraordinary design skill, personal vision and genuine character to be the Design Director for the Obama 2012 campaign. He delivered. Josh will be a speaker at next year's AIGA Y Design Conference and I hope our students and alumni can be there to hear his amazing adventures firsthand. We're really proud of you Josh and thanks for being a great inspiration to all of us with your authenticity and work.

I am deeply grateful that I was able to visit with Josh at Obama HQ in Chicago this past June. Seeing the important and incredible work he was creating I couldn't help but reflect on the gratitude I feel for the opportunity to teach at City College. I know many faculty and staff who share that passion for our students. In 2014 SDCC will celebrate being a part of this community for 100 years. Graphic design will finally get a beautiful new building and lab for the centennial. For my part, I will look fondly back and forward, celebrating our inspiring students and their work, the dedicated teachers and chance to be a part of the SDCC graphic design family. For me that family will always be the definition of hope.

SDCC Graphic Design: Vote Yes on 30 Website

Take a look at the amazing array of posters created by SDCC Graphic Design students and faculty at Vote Yes on 30. A big shout goes out to Ariel Freaner who built the site and City College design students who submitted their work from the classes of MaeLin Levine and Candice López.

The website voices support for Proposition 30 on the November ballot to fellow students, friends and the community. Our grassroots group believes that public schools and colleges give every Californian access to education and building a strong economy means keeping an eye on future generations. Support for Prop. 30 will stop another $6 billion in cuts to our schools this year and prevent steep tuition increases for college students and their families. By investing in California schools we invest in the future.

The goal of the website was to encourage classmates, faculty, staff and the community to take a stand and protect our public colleges and schools. We hope that others will share these posters on facebook and other social media sites. Working together we can be ambassadors of education and motivate our classmates and the community to get involved.
