Being a graphic designer is not easy. We have to create effective and engaging designs, usually on tight deadlines and often with hard-to-please clients. We have to have tools and techniques ready in our design arsenal to be able to inspire our creativity and explain and defend our designs to clients, art directors and account managers.

In this process workshop you will:

Learn more about what a typical process for a graphic design project can look like.

Understand why it is so important (professionally and mentally)

to nail down a process that works for you.

Get tips on how you can take steps towards finding a design process that will help you become a more productive (and calmer) designer.

See samples of how other designer have used process pages in their portfolios to communicate the process they used to develop their design concepts.

SDCC Graphic Design Certificate and Degree Program

As we begin the Spring 2012 semester we are posting this listing of classes for the SDCC certificate and degree in Graphic Design. It is so important to take your classes in the right order as they build on each other. Take the beginning classes first, followed by the intermediate and then the advanced level.

A few changes are on the horizon for students who enter the program in the Fall of 2012. We will be deleting the freehand drawing class and making Typography 206 a requirement in the Intermediate level. Students will be able to choose from Illustration 120 or Book Arts at the beginning level.
Portfolio 148A [portfolio preparation] will become a requirement at the Advanced level.

Visual and Performing Arts
Art: Graphic Design
Living in an information-seeking society, we are surrounded by words and pictures. It is the task of the graphic designer to research, analyze, organize and make artistic order out of chaos. Graphic design students must learn to speak a global visual language and develop an awareness of the meanings and power of symbols and words. The products and services they design and promote will make a social and ecological impact. An emphasis is placed on using design to make a difference through social and humanitarian projects and practices.
Program Emphasis
Early emphasis is on the design process, form, color and typography. The elements and principles of design are applied to projects which include packaging, magazine production, and design and production of posters, logos and brochures. Guided by instructors who are working design professionals, students learn to design for the real world. They make decisions about issues of concept, format, imagery, type, printing and methodology. Computer and traditional methods are used to solve graphic problems. The program culminates in a professional portfolio which can be used to continue studies to a four-year university or obtain employment. The portfolio is critiqued by practicing design advisors and alumni.

Career Options
Some careers in graphic design-related work require education beyond the associate degree. This list is not all-inclusive: advertising designer, art director, environmental graphic designer, graphic designer, type designer, illustrator, and magazine/editorial designer, multimedia designer, web page designer.
Academic Programs
Major requirements for an emphasis in graphic design for the certificate and associate degree require completion of the courses listed below. Additional general education and graduation requirements for the associate degree are listed in the catalog. The associate degree requires a minimum of 60 units.

Here's a quick taste of the Pantone Color of the Year-Tangerine Tango. If that's not enough to excite chromophobics then what's not to love about the google image search by color?

Select a color in your browser and all the images will come up in your favorite hue.

Great for crafting mood boards this Spring in all your classes.

Tangerine Tango is described as a spirited reddish orange that will boost and re-charge your energy as you move forward. Adjectives used to evoke the sensations of this color are sophisticated, dramatic, and seductive with lots of depth. Leatrice Eiseman who is the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute says it is "reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset' as it "marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy."

Hard to believe that the new Arts and Humanities building is currently under construction and will be completed in 2013. We will have a state of the art graphic design lab and classrooms. Our classrooms are on the top floor of the 3 story white building with our lab windows in the back. It is next to the rectangular silver sided building by the purple jacaranda tree. This will also be the new entrance to the campus.

It's great to stay in touch with our graduates as many transfer to some great schools to pursue advanced studies. Recently we caught up with SDCC Graphic Design alumni Kathleen Fitzgerald who is pursuing her graduate degree at the prestigious School of Visual Arts New York.

After graduating with a BA in Visual Arts from USD, I was still at a place in my design career that needed clarification. I did not know what direction to take and was eager and desperate to learn more. Along comes San Diego City College. City gave me the incentive to pursue graphic design and an awareness of execution and form that I was lacking. Through course selection, student collaboration, and professor feedback, I learned to combine my innovative and sometimes ambitious conceptual ideas with the power of design, to create harmony between form and content.

City also made it possible for me to reach a point where I was ready to apply for graduate school. Now, in my first year at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, I am engulfed in my studies and pushing to the extreme, mentally and strategically, to execute my best work. It's hard not to be motivated in a place like SVA, where the people I've studied and followed have become my professors and mentors. Students come from all backgrounds of study and from all over the world. The classes range from conceptual, to 3D, to placing emphasis on craftsmanship, and in turn, all influence each other. This program is, hands down, life-changing.

A favorite course of mine is Stefan Sagmeister's 'Can Design Touch Someone's Heart?' where we are assigned a specific target audience and have to create custom and, more importantly, appropriately designed products that become emotionally impacting.

Go after your dreams and take the time to do so when you need it. Passion and hard work lead to some impressive outcomes, and curiosity and intuition fulfill them.

SDCC Alumni Josh Higgins story in East County Times

As a bass player for the San Diego rock group fluf, Josh Higgins traveled the country touring with notable acts like Jawbreaker, Fugazi, Blink 182 and Sublime. His music led him to a career in graphic design and San Diego City College. His socially conscious work such as the So-Cal Fire Poster Project and Haiti Poster Project has received international recognition and the attention of important companies and clients.

Now Josh has a new boss. He works for the President of the United States and consults with him personally. "Josh doesn't have to pinch himself awake for the dream. He's living it. He is now responsible for the artwork and design of his whole re-election campaign".

Getting things started with this incredible Mad Hatter costume and make-up by SDCC design student Gary Harding. He researched the film with Johnny Depp for authenticity and made the lined coat with tails and hat from scratch! That coat is going to look great with jeans after the party is over Gary. Paul Drohan, SDCC Alumni and Creative Director of Digitaria will be on campus to talk about designing a type font and poster at an orientation to CRN 58022: Studio Practices: Portfolio Building to be offered Spring 2012 by SDCC Graphic Design. Paul is an alumni and a decade ago won first place in the AIGA Student Portfolio Review that included an original font and poster.

This dynamic 8 week hybrid class that meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1-2:40pm in V403A and online. This class will target design students who will be taking portfolio in the Spring of 2012 or the following year 2013 and want to work intensively to build four substantial projects for the book. Led by portfolio teachers Candice López and Sean Bacon our projects will include:

1. Designing an original type font and a project to showcase it.

2. An intensive study of identity clustered by style and technique and study of micro-trends in logo design and packaging. Development of an original identity to be applied to iconic packaging for the portfolio. This branding can then be applied to a variety of applications.

3. and 4. A great challenge for students is creating substantial collateral pieces. In this class students will develop two; including an identity manual and will then choose between an annual report or magazine design.

Students can gain free admission and a docent guided tour to and incredible exhibition of Great Spanish Masters from the Perez Simon Collection. Enjoy works by Dali, Picasso, De Chirico, Magritte, Miro, Sorrolla and many others.

Illustrator Rafael López will share his illustrations that are a fusion of strong graphic style and magical symbolism. His children’s book illustrations for Book Fiesta! won the 2010 Pura Belpré Illustrator Award given by the American Library Association. His 2008 poster Voz Unida was an official poster at Artists for Obama. He has designed 8 stamps for the United States Postal Service and created 3 paintings for Oprah Winfrey's school in South Africa. His studio is in a renovated car garage in the East Village.

In 2005 Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana and SDCC Graphic Design sent an email to community colleges that had been devastated and flooded by this disaster. We hoped to bring a displaced student from the region to San Diego where they could continue their studies. Reaching out to the campus and community we were able to secure free housing and generous support to pay for food, books and enrollment fees for a worthy student. His name was Elton Fletcher and last week he re-connected with us to share his story.

Highest highs and lowest lows

I remember the day I first spoke with Professor Lopez. It was five days after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and I was totally in a daze. I received an email from Professor Pecquet at Nunez Community College where I had been attending school. It said "EL you need to contact Candice Lopez ASAP." And that was the call to my adventure. But before I could go I had to make sure my family was safe. The three months that followed was filled with family fun, birthday parties, daily trips to Wal mart and a lot of prayers. And by Thanksgiving my family returned to Louisiana.

After New Years I drove out west. It was an eye opening experience. A two day drive with a layover in El Paso. Then I arrived in San Diego where that night I met a cool dude named Brody Alpert. He gave me a run down on the lay of the land in SD. The next day I met Sondra Lognado. She took over my car to give me a city tour and we visited San Diego City College. The following day David joined us and we all had breakfast at the Hash House and a tour of some of the art hotspots in SD. This was only the third day in San Diego and already I had made three amazing friends.

Two weeks later I met Professor Lopez at Cafe 222. I must admit I was very nervous. I didn't eat a thing. I'm a little shy. She has a great aura and it's very bright. We talked about Katrina, my family, her family, and about this new start as an artist. This was something I had always wanted to pursue but never have the opportunity. She told me, "the time is now so dig in." From this meeting my life as an artist was re-born and it was the magic key for me. This was my calling. That following year I jumped into to the pool of art and design students at City College and never looked back. San Diego City College was that spark I had been questing for. That year I was not only educated but found my calling in life. I made so many new friends that I'm still in contact with till today.

Today my family is all back in New Orleans-back in the 7th Ward Columbia Parc. I'm currently in Dallas where I work as a print and web graphic designer at Collin College in the Art Department. I'm pursuing an MFA at the University of Texas Dallas in Sculpture and Emerging Media and Communications. When I'm done in three years here's hoping I will be making my return to teach art at City College.

Steve Jobs: Innovative Thinker and Dreamer

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of innovative thinker-a true genius who understood what we wanted even before we did. Steve Jobs.

He helped create the Macintosh computer that revolutionized graphic design and the world. He reinvented the portable music player with the iPod, and introduced a way to legally sell music online with iTunes. The iPhone changed the way we use cell phones and the iPad was a breakthrough that gave breath to the electronic tablet market. At one point in his life he quit school but enrolled in one course at Reed College to study calligraphy. “If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts.” Jobs said.

Thinking back to our first lab in 1988 when students would stand patiently in line to use our cherished 6 Mac SE computers it makes sense that even the skies of San Diego are filled with tears tonight.

SDCC Alumni Lauren Casgren-Tindall connects from Rotterdam Holland

At SDCC Lauren's bright spirit, positve attitude and passion for packaging stood out. Building a successful career in design is a journey and we wanted to catch up and find out how this determined designer ended up in Holland. The year she graduated from City was really tough, as the bubble had burst and jobs were not easy to find. In Lauren's wise words she "left no stone unturned". She began her career in San Diego doing graphic design for a furniture company and got the basic experience she needed before moving to New York. She applied for every kind of job even ones she was not yet qualified for in hopes her work would be seen. Although she wasn't sure if it was the best approach, it worked and she got an interview for an art director position at Victoria's Secret. She was truthful in her interview and was offered a graphic design position instead thus getting her foot in the door of the beauty packaging world. That led her a few years later to her dream job at Avon designing fragrance bottles and packaging.

"No matter how tough the job market is, it only takes one person to take a chance on you. I was an average designer when I graduated from City College, but with teachers like Candice and MaeLin they instilled confidence in me and as I soon learned I would get better. Confidence, curiosity, and passion are the keys to success". About a year and a half ago, Lauren left Avon to move to Miami as she wanted new challenges. There she freelanced for Benihana and started Logohaven.com designing logos & branding, before deciding to take a short summer course in product design in London/Milan. Afterwards, she wanted to live in Europe for a while, and stopped in Holland, where with luck and hard work she got a business visa to begin her own design company. Creme de Mint Design is located in Rotterdam, Holland and she is working with a couple of Dutch partners on projects, including a tea product line. She also works within a media company at the Creative Factory an inspiring space where they put 150 companies into a shared space that helps you build your network. SDCC Graphic Design Alumni Chris Do got the 2010 Emmy for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation for the Ravenonettes "Heart of Stone" video.

My graphic design career began at San Diego City College, where instructors including Candice Lopez were instrumental in preparing me for continued training at the Art Center College of Design. I attended SDCC in 1990, and in 2 semesters, with the support and encouragement from Candice, completed my portfolio and gained admission to Art Center. The program, even in its early stages, taught me valuable skills that I use to this day as Founder, President and Executive Creative Director of Blind Inc.

What began as a two person operation has flourished into a bicoastal enterprise serving a range of clients that include McCann Erickson, Electronic Arts, Deutsch, Chiat/Day, Amnesty International, FCB, DDB, Fox Sports Net, MTV, G4, Land Rover, Sony, Microsoft, Gnarls Barkley and Justin Timberlake. With offices in New York and Santa Monica, Blind creates visual narratives fusing art, design, technology and culture for broadcast television, film and interactive media. SDCC fostered the passion for creative excellence that drives both the work I do and my vision for the future.

It's really exciting to feature the amazing alumni who have completed their graphic design studies at San Diego City College and are now flourishing as dynamic creative professionals.

Paul Drohan is the Senior Creative Director at Digitaria, an award winning full service agency. They offer interactive strategy, design, marketing, technology, search, and analytics.

If you want to learn more about what Paul does you can join AIGA SDCC on Friday December 2 at 12 noon for a studio tour. When Paul graduated from SD City College he won first place in the AIGA San Diego Portfolio Review. He was the first San Diego student to ever design a type font and include it in his portfolio at the review and that font was later picked up by T-26. He has continued to surprise and delight us with his work and while raising 3 kids still finds a way to keep it fresh. SDCC Alumni Josh Higgins gets top design job for Obama.

A BIG shout goes out to Josh Higgins, San Diego City College Graphic Design Alumni who was just named the Design Director for Obama for America. He will oversee everything graphic for the campaign including the website, brand systems and collateral. All the graphic design you see for the Obama re-election campaign will be from Josh and his creative team.

Josh is a senior designer / art director who works across all disciplines including print, web, environment, identity and television. For over twelve years, he's been refining the art of connecting brands to people with a concept-driven visual style that has earned him national honors. A native San Diegan, with roots in both advertising and graphic design, Josh has done extensive work for brands including Fender Guitars, The Tony Hawk Foundation, Hewlett-Packard, Qualcomm, Asics Footwear, Museum of Contemporary Art SD, CBS Radio, Perry Ellis International, RedBrick Pizza, IHOP, New Castle Beer, PF Changs, Yamaha, Life Technologies, and firms, Miriello Grafico, Mires/Ball, Hollis BC, and Vitrorobertson.

Before completing his design degree at San Diego City College, Josh's first career was as a musician with his band, fluf. The group has 7 albums out on Cargo, FAT and MCA/Universal Records, and has done national tours with Jawbreaker, Fugazi, Rocket from the Crypt, Blink 182, Sublime, The Vans Warped Tour and many others.

With his involvement in the San Diego design community, Josh served on the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), San Diego Board of Directors, where he curated successful exhibits and lecture series with visiting photographers, designers and film makers. His continual work with AIGA and the larger creative community allows him to advance the cause of San Diego arts and culture, and mentor students in the creative industry.

He quickly re-located to Chicago where he will begin a busy 13 months overseeing a team of 33 creatives. Congratulations Josh!

His amazing community spirit is evidenced in the many dynamic projects Josh created like the Hurricane Poster Project, So-Cal Poster Project, and Haiti Poster Project. He has been a regular speaker and mentor in the SDCC graphic design program, organizing student scholarships through fundraising concerts and events. Incredibly dedicated, immeasurably talented, and among the most generous of individuals, Doyald Young's influence spanned over 60 years of life as a designer, author, teacher, mentor and friend. Please join us for this special event, Honoring Doyald Young, on Thursday, March 24th, 6:30 PM at the University of San Diego's Joan Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice.

The evening will feature a list of speakers including Tom Kleimeyer, Tim Needham, Michael Osborne and Petrula Vrontikis, as well as a screening of the recent lynda.com documentary on Doyald's life and work. A pre-event reception will feature examples of Doyald's contributions to his craft, along with the opportunity to acquire The Art of the Letter, a limited edition book created in collaboration with Doyald's dear friends at SMART Papers.

Seating is limited to 300 people, so please arrive early. Admission is $5.00 with 100% of the proceeds going to the Doyald Young Memorial Scholarship to be awarded at the 2011 AIGA San Diego Portfolio Review.

I am writing to tell you that the Poet of Letterforms, our friend Doyald Young has passed away.

In the master’s hand a 2H pencil became a magic wand. He was remarkable, elegant and kind and was loved by so many here in San Diego and around the world. He leaves the great legacy of his teaching, forever changing students and teachers through his books, generosity and extraordinary work. Articulate beyond measure, his words and letters resonate. Inscribed in Young Baroque his name is written in the deepest spaces of our hearts.

There will be a very special event honoring Doyald Young in San Diego on Thursday night March 24th at 6:30 pm at the theatre at the University of San Diego Joan Croc Center for Peace and Justice. Join us to celebrate all things Doyald including a screening of the film about him. More information will be made available shortly so please plan to attend as we establish a scholarship to honor his legacy. We remember his countless visits to San Diego City College that inspired the work of many generations of SDCC students and teachers. His ideas about modification of type were a profound influence in the graphic design program. For decades he generously made his books available at half price to SDCC students because he was passionate about letterforms and wanted our students to grow into strong designers. He then took the time to personally dedicate each book in his own hand to the student who bought it. There are the stories of many City College students who got one on one help from this type legend with logos and typography when they were stuck. We would draw names out of the hat in portfolio class and the winner got a one on one crit of a logo with this master typographer.

This photo was taken in 2008 at the Saville Theatre when Doyald came to connect with us on one of his many visits to San Diego City College. Who can forget the packed October meeting in 2003 when students got a beautiful book produced by SMART papers at the AIGA membership meeting and Doyald staying late to sign each one? He was always there in the trenches helping students and teachers learn to draw and love letters as he did. Doyald Young received the 2009 Gold Medal from the American Institute of Graphic Arts for his dedication to teaching and remarkable work that continues to inspire new generations of designers.

In an interview in The Dotted Line Doyald was asked:
What do you hope to teach the next generation?

Awareness. Education aspires to enlighten.

Even though we draw letters in my classes, what I’m really doing is opening my students’ eyes to subtlety and nuance. Lettering is drawing, and drawing teaches you how to think. It infuses all aspects of design. It’s not some arcane, Zen exercise, but rather a vital ingredient for a complete design education.

Sony Electronics Design Center located in San Diego, CA, is looking for a Design Intern during the summer to assist the senior designers and the design manager, on design projects in brand identity and packaging in the consumer electronics industry. William Kentridge is an active visual artist born and based in Johannesburg, South Africa. After studying Political Science at university, he became active in Theatre and Writing. In the 1980's he created his signature technique of short films he calls "drawings in motion."

A series of his short films features Soho Eckstein and relates the history of his home country with the pains it inflicted. This series drew worldwide attention as an artistic expression resonating with postcolonial criticism.

Underlying his works and activities is a determination to examine the universal issues confronting modern people. He accomplishes this by questioning such issues as the ways in which people may build a relationship with the world, the ambiguities of goodwill and oppression, and the conflicting and ambivalent disposition of the individual. Brian Jacobs, Founder and Creative Director, Brick Design Brian graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Art, Architecture and Planning in 1991. He began his career in New York City freelancing and worked for a number of design firms including Carla Hall Design Group. He then moved to San Francisco, joined Pentagram Design and after two years was made Associate Partner. In 1999, Brian directed a small group that concentrated solely on interactive design. Brian started Brick Design in 2007. Under his leadership, Brick has evolved and diversified into the areas of identity, environmental graphics, packaging and user-interface design. This multidisciplinary approach is reflected in a client list that ranges from the technology industry of Apple, Microsoft, Sun Microsystems and Nikon, to the educational field of The University of Southern California, Stanford University and to the hospitality division of One & Only Resorts. Among others are Cannon Design, Muzak, United Airlines, Potlatch Paper, Café Mia Gelateria, and Home Depot. Brians work has garnered numerous awards including AIGA 365, IDSA IDEA awards, ID Magazine, Graphis, and the CA Design Annual among others. He recently served 3 years as president of AIGA San Francisco and he spearheaded the 2003 Grown in California design competition.

Angela graduated from San Diego City College and went on to Art Center on scholarship. Currently Angela is a Senior Art Director for Young & Rubicam Brands. In that role, she directs design and brand strategy for a variety of clients, including Land Rover USA, Virgin America, Hitachi, KinderCare, Southwest and Orange County Pacific Symphony. Her work at Y&R has earned several awards in the industry including International Automotive Advertising Awards, International Communicator Awards, Orange County Advertising Awards, NY Festivals – Interactive Award and the Luster Wunderman Award. Her Identity work has been featured in the book “logolounge 2”.

Prior to her agency work, she worked for marchFIRST, an internet brand consulting firm. Her experience includes working for clients such as Allergan, Amgen, Mazda, iGeneration and Shoes.com. ABOUT RAFAEL:
The work of Rafael López is a fusion of strong graphic style and magical symbolism. Growing up in Mexico City he was immersed in the rich cultural heritage and native color of street life. Influenced by Mexican surrealism, dichos and myths he developed a style with roots in these traditions.

He is a children’s book illustrator and his illustrations for Book Fiesta! written by Pat Mora were the recipient of the 2010 Pura Belpré Illustrator Award. This is given by the American Library Association to honor work that best portrays, affirms and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in children's books. His books for children have also won 2 Americas Awards and a Pura Belpré Honor.

In January 2011 five new stamps he created for the United States Postal Service were released celebrating Latin Music Legends Celia Cruz, Carlos Gardel, Tito Puente, Carmen Miranda and Selena. The Latin Dance Merengue stamp he created was featured on the cover of the commemorative stamp yearbook in 2006 and at a special exhibition at the Smithsonian called Trendsetters. His 2007 U.S.P.S. stamp paid tribute to an important legal case in equality of education called Mendez vs. Westminster.

His 2008 poster Voz Unida was selected by the Obama/Biden campaign as an official poster at Artists for Obama. His international clients includes Amnesty International, Apple, Chicago Tribune, Harper Collins, IBM, Intel, Los Angeles Times, the Grammy Awards, and the World Wildlife Fund and his work has been selected into multiple juried shows. In 2009 he was invited to create 3 paintings for Oprah Winfrey's school in South Africa. He created murals for the Urban Art Trail Project that transformed San Diego's blighted East Village with art installations and serves as a model of urban renewal that has been implemented in cities around the nation.

100 Worlds Project

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SAN DIEGO, CA) – Ron Miriello presents the first installment of 50 sculptures from his 100 Worlds Project. The exhibition will be on view beginning Friday, February 18, through Saturday, March 26, 2011 at JETT Gallery in the Little Italy district of downtown San Diego.
The opening reception will take place at JETT Gallery on Friday, February 18, 2011 from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m, with a VIP and media preview reception starting at 5:00 p.m. for invited guests.
EXHIBITION DETAILS
Ron Miriello is the President and Creative Director of the esteemed brand communications firm Miriello Grafico. For 30 years, he has dedicated his life’s work to developing brands and creative communication campaigns for clients ranging from Adidas, HP, Qualcomm, Iomega, Taylormade, and others. As a creative director and business owner by trade, Ron uses his creativity to better the business of his clients.
The genesis of the 100 Globes Project arose from a need to create something purely for himself, to create for the sake of creating. Miriello found inspiration in an object of fascination from his childhood – the globe. Both the shape and related metaphors that the globe provided him a launching pad to create his sculptures. Through the process of assembling each piece, he began to build a community around the project. He invited welders, graphic designers, printers, artisans and craftsman to contribute to the project, to help him assemble found objects, design patterns, cut pieces that he would use to create a globe.
The process of building these sculptures organically produced the ultimate metaphor of what a globe meant for Miriello – a symbol of collaboration, community and creativity. Miriello states:
“The mantra for this project for me was ‘resourcefulness equals creativity’ not only in the sense of finding and sourcing the materials for each sculpture, but also to tap into my friends and community of creative people that I have been blessed to have in my life. The freedom to create for the sake of creating allowed me to expand outward, and reach out to people that I knew - craftsman and artisans who make things and create everyday, never consider themselves artists. It has been a pleasure and honor to invite these folks in, and shed new light on their work, to have them reconsider themselves as perhaps an artist.”
The exhibition opening on February 18 will feature the first 50 sculptures of this ambitious project. In addition to the sculptures, the exhibition will feature 50 interpretive photographs of each piece, taken by noted photographers such as Phillip Ritterman, John Durrant, Ken West and others, who were invited by Miriello to contribute their talents to the project.
A self-published book about the “100 World’s Project” will accompany the exhibition, and will be available for sale at JETT Gallery. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of sculptures will benefit the San Diego Brain Tumor Foundation .

The closing reception is scheduled to take place on March 26, 2011, in conjunction with AIGA San Diego’s Y Conference closing. More details on this reception will be provided at a later date.

In November we will have the opportunity to learn more about Book Arts from artist Sibyl Rubottom at Bay Park Press.

This workshop will cover a brief history of book arts with examples of eastern and western style book bindings. A glossary of book arts and binding terms will be provided along with a book list and source list.  Workshop attendees will make an eight page book from a single sheet of paper. A second book structure will be made with an accordion binding. Workshop attendees will then proceed to learn how to cover boards for book covers. The final piece will have a soft spine, sewn binding with hard covers.

Seats are limited to 15-18 students. More details to be posted soon!

Artist's Bio:
Sibyl Rubottom holds her M.F.A. from Yale University in Painting and her B.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design, where she was a European Honors Student in Rome. Sibyl is currently co-proprietor of Bay Park Press in San Diego. Bay Park Press is a small fine arts press specializing in limited edition Artists Books and fine intaglio prints. Sibyl's books are in the special collections of the John Hay Library at Brown University; Sterling Library at Yale University; U.C.S.D. Mandeville Special Collections; San Diego State University's Malcolm A. Love Library; Occidental College (Los Angeles); Brigham Young University; Dartmouth College; Indiana University; Walker Art Center; California State University, Hayward; The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, La Jolla, California. Sibyl is currently Artist-in-Residence at the Athenaeum Music and Arts Library in La Jolla, California. She teaches Book Arts at its School of the Arts and at the University of California San Diego Extension. Sibyl conducts creativity workshops and regularly leads tours to Mexico in which book arts are a focus of the trip. For 25 years Sibyl operated Sibyl Designs, a fabric art business specializing in hand-painted fabric products for the residential and commercial design community. Living in an information-seeking society, we are surrounded by words and pictures. It is the task of the graphic designer to research, analyze, organize and make artistic order out of chaos. Graphic design students must learn to speak a global visual language and develop an awareness of the meanings and power of symbols and words. The products and services they design and promote will make a social and ecological impact. An emphasis is placed on using design to make a difference through social and humanitarian projects and practices.
Program Emphasis
Early emphasis is on the design process, form, color and typography. The elements and principles of design are applied to projects which include packaging, magazine production, and design and production of posters, logos and brochures. Guided by instructors who are working design professionals, students learn to design for the real world. They make decisions about issues of concept, format, imagery, type, printing and methodology. Computer and traditional methods are used to solve graphic problems. The program culminates in a professional portfolio which can be used to continue studies to a four-year university or obtain employment. The portfolio is critiqued by practicing design advisors and alumni.

Some careers in graphic design-related work require education beyond the associate degree. This list is not all-inclusive: advertising designer, art director, environmental graphic designer, graphic designer, type designer, illustrator, and magazine/editorial designer, multimedia designer, web page designer.

The 14th annual AIGA SD Student Portfolio Exhibition was a great success with over 200 attendees this year. The featured speaker at the event was the amazing Paul Drohan, an alumni of San Diego City College Graphic Design who now heads up Digitaria San Diego[see digitaria.com]. Dear Friends,

The LINK students have had a creative year and I would like to invite you their Art Show at ART's on Feb. 20, 2010 at 6:00-8:00. If you can't stop by to check out their work, please help out by forwarding this e-mail to all your friends, post it on your FB or Twitter. Last year's art show was at Ray at Night so we had the foot traffic, the new location depends your help to get the word out.

This is my third year as the AIGA San Diego LINK director and I am thankful to have an opportunity to give back to the community. LINK reaches out to at risk youth and I believe all of today's youths are at-risk of losing art with all the budget cuts. The LINK program provides free art workshops for 14-19 year old students with an interest in pursuing a career in graphic design, photography and art.

LINK's most recent success story..... last summer I took a few students to San Fransisco for the day to see Academy of Art. Two of our students signed up for their summer three week high school program. LINK provided a scholarship to pay for their housing, tuition and meals. I received a call last week and one of the students and told me that he just started classes at Academy of Art. He mentioned that his involvement in the LINK program has made a positive impact on his life. Know that's the good stuff!

A special thanks to Candice Lopez for having the vision over 11 years ago to start LINK, Tony Battaito for his continuous support, the mentors that keep coming back to help make it happen and David Combs, the art show curator (he has been working hard). Oh, yeah and the Coyne Foundation for the funding.

At Art Center, Graphic Design students learn to infuse words and images with life and meaning, whether they are creating motion graphics on the latest digital equipment, or setting type by hand in Art Center’s letterpress shop.

Our program begins with an accelerated education in the formal principles of design, aesthetics and craftsmanship, after which students may specialize in a single area of graphic design or explore the full scope of communication design.

The highly rigorous and structured BFA curriculum is centered around a core class covering all aspects of graphic design practice. Each year in residence builds on the experience of the previous as a sequence of additional classes explore imagemaking, typography and design history. MFA Graphic Design (2-year)

The 2-year MFA curriculum focuses on the advanced exploration of form, methodology and practice, informed by a consciousness of the following contexts: contemporary practice, craft, audience, theory and history, and the constantly shifting media environment. Individual critique within a communal studio structure helps designers to develop a personal direction and agenda, intended to influence work beyond graduate school. The first-year curriculum consists of a sequence of weekly seminars in which research and studio projects are examined and discussed. The second year in residence is dedicated to developing and realizing a major thesis project that contributes to—and challenges—the graphic design community at large. In each of the two years, graduate students deepen and refine their work though a set of required and elective courses covering subjects such as type design, typography, motion graphics, design theory and design history. Visiting designers who lead short-term projects are another important aspect of the CalArts program, which consciously seeks to broaden the types of experiences offered to students within the focused studio environment.

The Program in Graphic Design also offers a three-year MFA for talented students who have a background in visual work but only limited experience in graphic design. Each year, the MFA program accepts approximately eight students for the two-year program and five students for the three-year program. At the core of graphic design at SCAD is conceptual thinking. Now more than ever, great design matters. It has to stand out in the avalanche of posters, ads, flyers, direct mail pieces, books, magazines, Web sites, etc., or else disappear from sight.

Living in an information-seeking society, we are surrounded by words and pictures. It is the task of the graphic designer to research, analyze, organize and make artistic order out of chaos. Graphic design students must learn to speak a global visual language and develop an awareness of the meanings and power of symbols and words. The products and services they design and promote will make a social and ecological impact. An emphasis is placed on using design to make a difference through social and humanitarian projects and practices.
Program Emphasis
Early emphasis is on the design process, form, color and typography. The elements and principles of design are applied to projects which include packaging, magazine production, and design and production of posters, logos and brochures. Guided by instructors who are working design professionals, students learn to design for the real world. They make decisions about issues of concept, format, imagery, type, printing and methodology. Computer and traditional methods are used to solve graphic problems. The program culminates in a professional portfolio which can be used to continue studies to a four-year university or obtain employment. The portfolio is critiqued by practicing design advisors and alumni.

Some careers in graphic design-related work require education beyond the associate degree. Darya Dotorksky and the Urban Trees Project

Darya Dotorksky who won the illustration category at the AIGA San Diego Portfolio Review recently unveiled an urban tree. She took 2 sculpture classes at City College and Professor Terri Hughes-Oelrich casually mentioned that she should submit a proposal for the Urban Trees project this year. It was only 1 week before the deadline and she had to think fast so she made one of her drawings into a sculpture. Darya submitted the model to the Port's Public Art Committee for the Urban Trees 6 project and was selected in a field of only 30 artists. The finished sculpture is now exhibited on the North Embarcadero for 1 year; located right next to Anthony's restaurant.

Title - APollo Del Sol
Dimensions -11 ft high x 6 ft wide
Material - Marine grade plywood
The title of the sculpture “APollo Del Sol” is combined from Spanish ”a chick of the sun” and Apollo - a god of light and the sun; truth and prophecy; medicine and healing; music, poetry, and the art. The firebird and its twin “icebird” symbolize several conceptually connected dual elements - sun and moon, day and night, life and death, fire and ice. In China, Phoenix-like bird is used to represent females. It is also said that Phoenix can heal a person with a tear from its eyes and make them temporarily immune to death. The female birds in my design are carrying an egg, a symbol of new life, rebirth and hope.

Economy Collective Posters

A student collective of the 2009 portfolio class decided to create a series of posters to help jump start the local economy. The objective was to create a national economic upturn by empowering citizens to embrace and promote local businesses and culture. The group hoped the pieces would educate communities that local business activity develops sustainable capital, materials, labor and consumption. Featured here are posters by SDCC design students Tokiko Kinoshita, Ravit Bennier, Melissa Reese, Bekka Palmer, Angie Stamos-Guerra and Darya Dotorksky. Project art directors included instructors James Bowman, Candice López and Rafael López. Studio Works screen printing workshops were conducted at Visual Asylum to print the posters.
