Book Arts Classes at SDCC this Spring!

Exciting new course offering at City College:

This course explores the 20 th century popular art form -- the hand - made art book. Students will investigate a variety of structures, materials and techniques used in the construction of traditional and contemporary book arts. Students will focus on both form and content by combining image, word and structure into an art object. Structures and techniques covered in course are as follows:
1. Accordion binding (with variation)
2. Triangle book
3. Paste Paper
4. Single leaf fold structure
5. Hardcover single signature part binding
6. Wire edge binding
7. Diamond Maze Book
8. Japanese binding
9. Folders and soft wrap
10. Pop-up techniques
11. Portfolio pocket, pamphlet stitch binding
12. Embossing/Debossing
13. Altered Books
14. Paper cut outs
15. Boxes
16. Collage methods and altered surface techniques

This course is designed for students from a variety of backgrounds; portfolio students, graphic designers, fine artists, and the begin student with no art background. The open ended curriculum allows students to explore their personal artistic voice while engaging in hands on projects.
